Basics of timber as a structural material: anisotropy and heterogeneity. Mechanical properties of timber. The need to dry and grade timber. The influence of moisture content. Comparison among timber, steel and concrete when used as structural materials in architecture. Engineered wood products. Crosslaminated and glued laminated timber. Connection systems.
